The Britannica (EB) defines Lacrosse: "competitive sport, modern version of the North American game of baggataway, in which two teams of players use long-handled, racketlike implements (crosses) to catch, carry, or throw a ball down the field or into the opponents' goal. The goal is defined by uprights and a crossbar framing a loose net.

The distinctive feature of the game is the crosse, the implement used by the players to carry, catch, and pass the ball. The crosse is a staff of wood, usually hickory, the top being sharply bent to form a hook from the end of which a thong is drawn and fastened to the shaft about 2 or 3 feet (0.6 or 0.9 m) from the end of the handle, forming an oval triangle that is woven with a loose network of leather, nylon, or gut to form the pocket with which the ball is handled."

Lacrosse Technique and Tradition by Bob Scott

Lacrosse : Fundamentals for Winning (Sports Illustrated Winner's Circle Books)
By - David Urick, Bob Woodward / Paperback / Published 1991:   a reader writes: I coach high school Lacrosse in Missouri, and have found this book a valuable tool in teaching Lacrosse to my players and their parents. I also loan this book out to other coaches and assistant coaches. The book is very comprehensive, but it is so easy to understand, that a total novice at Lacrosse is able to understand the game and even feel like an authority. It covers rules, history and strategy. In an area where Lacrosse is relatively new, this book is a god-send.

American Indian Lacrosse : Little Brother of War
By Thomas, Jr. Vennum / Paperback / Published 1994 - -a reader writes " Vennum's work covers a neglected aspect of North American history: the role of lacrosse in native culture. By examining varieties of the game played across the continent, Vennum demonstrates that it was more than just a sport. Lacrosse provided entertainment, served as a substitute for armed conflict (and sometimes was a precursor to it), and was part of native spirituality. Particularly fascinating is Vennum's ability to weave the sporting aspects of the game with the sociological. Also important is his investigation of how the majority culture has taken this game and turned into something completely different: with standardized plastic sticks and a for-profit motive for playing. By taking the story all the way to the present, the author reveals that to native Americans the game still means much more, although many nations no longer even know they once enjoyed playing the "fastest game on two feet.""
