When pondering the biggies of Western classical music, three B's spring to mind--Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. Indeed Johannes Brahms inherited, much to his dismay--and at an early age--Beethoven's mantle. Aware, thus, that his materials--letters, notes, early compositions--would provide a feeding frenzy for biographers, Brahms kept a tight rein on his own posterity, and successfully destroyed almost everything. Now comes Jan Swafford's whopping Johannes Brahms, wonderfully recovering more of Brahm's own materials-- letters, notebooks--than any previous biography of the master. Refreshingly, Swafford himself has translated them into modern and idiomatic English. Calling the biography "Brahms ohne Bart" ("Brahms without beard"), Swafford relieves Brahms of his venerability, and places him in the rich context of the politics, personalities, and esthetics of the romantic era
