A n example is captured in the top ranking book on Lewis and Clark ... In the spring of 1804, a party of explorers set out from St. Louis in search of the Northwest Passage, a possible water route across the continent to the Pacific Ocean. Under the leadership of two starkly different commanders, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, this diverse group calling itself the Corps of Discovery was comprised of soldiers, French Canadian boatmen, a slave named York, and, eventually, an Indian woman named Sacagawea and her infant son. Together this motley crew faced hardship, danger, and the possibility of failure as they crossed a continent by boat and on foot. Along the way, they recorded in their journals hundreds of never-before-seen plants and animals, encounters with new Native American cultures, and details of their remarkable adventures. In Lewis & Clark Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan recount the story of this incredible journey.
