Ottoman Empire: an empire created by Turkish tribes in Anatolia that lasted from the decline of the Byzantine Empire in the 14th century until the establishment of Turkey as a republic in 1922. It was named for Osman (Arabic: 'Uthman), an emir (prince) in Bithynia who began the conquest of neighbouring regions and who founded the empire's dynasty about 1300.  (Britannica)  - -

How did  they stay in power and rule such a vast extent?  a truly fascinating reality
READ MORE ABOUT THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE IN THESE TOP BOOKS:

Ottoman Centuries : The Rise and Fall of the Turkish Empire -- Lord Kinross  A reader writes : From Osman I to Ataturk you'll be mesmerized by this book.

Lords of the Horizons : A History of the Ottoman Empire -- Jason Goodwin  Jason Goodwin, a young English journalist, writes history as if it were today's breaking news, and with Lords of the Horizon, he delivers an anecdote-filled and breezy account of the long, troubled career of the Ottoman Empire. That empire endured for nearly 600 years and embraced not only a large territory--stretching, at one point, from the border of Iran to the gates of Vienna--but also hundreds of ethnic groups and three dozen nations. United under the banner of a tolerant form of Islam, the Ottoman Turks forged a culture that, Goodwin writes, "was such a prodigy of pep, such a miracle of human ingenuity, that contemporaries felt it was helped into being by powers not quite human--diabolical or divine, depending on their point of view."

An Economic and Social History of the Ottoman Empire : 1600-1914 -- Halil Inalcik  This major contribution to Ottoman history is now published in paperback in two volumes: the original single hardback volume (1995) has been widely acclaimed as a landmark in the study of one of the most enduring and influential empires of modern times. The authors provide a richly detailed account of the social and economic history of the Ottoman region, from the origins of the Empire around 1300 to the eve of its destruction during World War One. The breadth of range and the fullness of coverage make these two volumes essential for an understanding of contemporary developments in both the Middle East and the post-Soviet Balkan world.
